Tampa Old House Exchange

Old Seminole Heights resident Cara Davis has started a great new blog for owners of historic properties, preservation enthusiasts, and dedicated DIYers: Tampa Old House Exchange. This is conceived of as a clearinghouse of sorts for everything old house related: A place to trade or barter or sell old house parts like doors, windows, trim, flooring….anything. It is also a clearinghouse for ideas and experiences. Advice and projects you just won’t find on HGTV -

especially for Tampa. Neighbors helping neighbors. Ms. Davis is just starting this as a blog to get a feel for the response and need, but would like to develop this into a website complete with sections for different types of items, advice, referrals and even a plant exchange. Visit the blog, post a topic or two, and share some goods or experiences!

Still Trying to get the Word Out!

We have had some good hits, but they have dropped off....please pass this site on to your friends and family who may have a use for it.....I have gotten some very good feedback from local residents and business owners, but I need YOU to get the word out to people inorder to get this off the ground....hopefully advertisers will follow (with a little effort on my part).

We Have Our First Post!

Wendy writes;
I have just gutted the kitchen of my 1920's bungalow. I have some kitchen cabinets for barter or sell. They are the standard wood cabinets with the flat front with rounded edges normally seen in the houses from the 50's. They are currently painted white. We have 7 uppers, two lazy susan cabinets and one drawer cabinet. The lazy susans are very unique. If anyone is interested please email me. tampabungalow@gmail.com

***Please feel free to offer advice on how these posts should work...this is YOUR site....

A Little Traffic...

So I posted links on Craigslist and the OSH website, and I have had hits from both places...so I will continue to look for ways to spread the word...I need people to participate to make this work. If ANYONE wants to test this out and throw something over to me to post.....that would be great.

Introducing a New Idea!

Please bear with me as I try out this idea; it is in it's infancy. I am an old house owner here in Tampa, FL. There is no real architectural salvage yard within a sane distance (although I do admit the internet has brought such places much closer in concept). There is no place to walk around, get ideas or converse with locals and neighbors about fixing, maintaining or improving our old houses. I find it hard to believe that in this city full of wonderful old neighborhoods that there is nothing of this sort....craigslist....bleh....not really geared towards US.
Who needs an old door for their house? Who has some old windows they no longer need? Who wants to know a good way to fix something only applicable to an old house? THIS is what I would like this to become. A clearing house for old house parts - for sale or for trade, old house advice and how tos for the DIYers amongst us. Even a source of referrals for old house appropriate work; neighbors helping neighbors. Got an idea for your old house you'd like an honest critique of? That could work here too. This is only a "soft opening" There are no neighborhood politics, no restuarant reviews, no social calendar....just old house items and discussion...just for us here in Tampa. I would like to have some local businesses advertise here as well to be faithful to the "neighbors helping neighbors" concept, but only those with 2 local references would be able to advertise here (for services anyway). I think that is fair.
If this works out as I hope, and local folks are receptive, I would look to turn this into an actual website, but first things first....please pass this information around and if you have have items you need or need to get rid of...please email me here at the blog...I am in the process of setting this up so be patient. Feedback would be appreciated.
